Festive Sanctus
Festive Sanctus is a lively and unconventional sacred choral work by Michael Burke, written for SATB and piano. Subtitled “An Image from Heaven,” the piece combines the Latin acclamation Sanctus, sanctus, sanctus with original English poetic text filled with images of heavenly worship, thunder, glory, and the united song of earth and heaven. The piece has a touch of musical Attention Deficit Disorder in the best possible way. It does not sit still for long, shifting through changing meters, energetic rhythms, and sudden bursts of motion. Rather than treating the Sanctus as a quiet or predictable acclamation, the music gives it a restless, festive spirit, as if trying to capture the overwhelming sound and movement of heaven itself. With its driving piano accompaniment, bold vocal writing, and repeated returns to Sanctus, the work feels more like a sacred anthem or concert-style reflection than a standard Mass setting. Festive Sanctus is well suited for choirs looking for a joyful, dramatic, and distinctly Catholic piece that proclaims the holiness of God with color, energy, and celebration.
